evacuate, photojournalist on the run
Saturday, August 18, 2007, 01:33 PM - News, Hurricane Dean
I am on isla holbox, a 45 minute ferry ride for a point in the north of the yucatan peninsula, 3 hours away from the nearest big city, cancun ...writing from a dialup computer. I have a bride getting married today who has been told by the govt that she is to evacuate the island with friends and family. i am with my amigo, sergio photographer and we are going to document the event as it goes... this one is going to be exciting.

The bride plans to still get married today, somewhere on our way out, be it with her family on a ferry, in a shelter, or wherever it can happen. The priest coming to the island is forbidden to be here and there are no other options except for a word that someone here knows someone on the mainland who does mayan ceremonies.

this one is going to be good... look for some updates on this one folks. today, i am a true photojournalist, photographing a wedding on the run. imagine that?

oh, did i mention there was a predicted category 5 hurricane headed this way, in 2 days???

wish us luck, por favor

ok, so i should have posted this update earlier today, bu
***update***

this is really going to be mission mexico. our bride has a killer website, totally check it out.
mission mexico she has arranged for a private ferry off the island...amazing. there are hundreds if not thousands of locals escaping this island. our ferry will have all of the guests, we all carry our bags over our head into the ocean to get in a boat, and transportation to a small town, valladolid in central yucatan. there we will all have a room and a makeshift ceremony and dinner. crazy huh?

if you want to be a destination wedding photographer, think about what you are signing up for..If you are a bride planning a destination wedding in a tropical location during hurricane season, think about it twice...

this one is going to be a friggen doozy!

best,
mateo y sergio

i've completed the assignment, after hours and hours of driving and then a full evening of shooting, I was able to recommend a location for the bride and groom in Valladolid where Sol & I have stayed a few times, and they had one of the most romantic wedding receptions (they arrived dressed as bride and groom) and actually had the dinner before there ceremony, at this long elegant table with 32 table positions.... dance, cake, friends, fun, a total spontaneous wedding! mission completed!

photos coming soon on this one

Xcaret Mexico : 6.23.06 Luis & Denisse's wedding
Sunday, August 5, 2007, 12:45 PM - I do, Xcaret Mexico
I am sooo behind in posting my blog, so ok...here goes. I am lucky enough to go to my home in Playa del Carmen to shoot a few weddings every month, to keep all of our clients happy that want to go to the beach! This couple is not our typical destination wedding client. WHY? well, they are Mexican. Yep, we live in Mexico and shoot destination weddings there but hardly ever see a Mexican client... they are all gringos and Canadians...

Luis & Denisse actually live in my other hometown, Atlanta! They moved from LA the week they met me in my Atl Studio, literally were spending the night in their new home without furniture as it hadn't arrived from LA yet. Anyway, I just love how this business introduces me to new friends... I LOVE Them and their families..

I was fortunate enough to have Mark Adams from LaCour Photography 2nd shooting with me... Let me tell you folks, this guy is a genius... PLUS, the location is an amazing Archaeological park... Xcaret Mexico

Check out the slideshow of photographer favorites HERE

Also, I've been authoring a new photography blog, discussing lighting techniques that are WAY outside the box. Many folks don't realize how much we put into our lighting at our weddings, its rather technical and the results make the difference between good photos and SUPERB photos. Anyway, check out my conversation about the challenges of Luis & Denisse's wedding: www.flashflavor.com

Here a few photos...

I'm on VACATION
Monday, July 9, 2007, 09:46 PM - me
Sol & I are officially going to go on vacation tomorrow. Flight leaves at 7am, will be out of the house at 5. No, I haven’t packed anything yet…

I’m going to try to enjoy the Black Hills of South Dakota, Jackson Hole WY, Grand Tetons & Yellowstone. We are there for 2 weeks. Problem is, Sol & I are totally up to our ears in editing… We shot 4 weddings, 2 e-sessions, 1 ttd session, 1 rehearsal dinner in the last 8 days…oh, we traveled 5000+ miles to do it. Virgin Islands, Captiva Island FL, Riviera Maya Mexico….whew…We just landed yesterday in the Atl Studio from that adventure…

SO, needless to say, i’ve got some work ahead of me while I am on vacation. I will likely NOT be updating flashflavor…sorry, please hang out. We return on July 23.

Wolf Mountain Vineyards, Dahlonega, Ga : 06.09.07 Qiana & Kurt's wedding
Saturday, June 30, 2007, 12:51 PM - I do, Wolf Mountain Vineyards
We were thankful to leave our beach front environment for a refreshing visit to the North Georgia Mountain countryside in Dahlonega GA. Wolf Mountain Vineyards hosted their intimate wedding outside in their open air pavilion, a perfect scene to watch the rolling hills and setting sun.

King and Prince Hotel, St. Simons Island : 05.26.06 Sarah & John's wedding
Sunday, June 10, 2007, 03:15 PM - I do, King and Prince Hotel, St. Simons Island
St Simons Island is one of the many places that I visit each year, upwards of 10 times every year. The Georgia Coast, otherwise known as the "Golden Isles", is one of my favorite places to visit!

The wedding was in a small church on the north side of the island near Fort Frederica.

The bridal party was escorted across the island on a Trolley service.

The King & Prince Hotel hosted their reception.

Atlanta, GA : 05.19.07 Brooke & Derek's wedding
Sunday, June 10, 2007, 02:25 PM - I do
Brooke & Derek planned their wedding at this MASSIVE estate in the middle of the country east of Atlanta GA. This house has some pretty amazing architecture along with the perfect grounds to showcase a grand ceremony.

May is such a beautiful month for weddings outside in Georgia. I am SO thankful every time I shoot a wedding in or around Atlanta that has the ceremony outside... Folks, by far, outside weddings are the best way to share your best day with your family and friends, IMHO.

Special thanks to Ben Vigil for assisting me. Brian Steele, my long time personal assistant / 2nd shooter also completed the team. My team of photographers is a KEY element in delivering a dynamic portfolio. 3 angles of the bride walking down the isle is the way to go!
